Can mHealth really help to manage chronic diseases?

pill_manI read with interest the article about how Apple watch is being given to patients undergoing chemotherapy. The use of the Apple watch combined with the chemotherapy App from Medopad  will provide the patient and clinical team with data to monitor symptoms and temperature with the aim of improving treatment adherence.

mHealth Can Streamline Clinical Trials

Interesting addition to my blog on mHealth benefits within Clinical Trials

Health Care Social Media

Clinical trials are crucial to validating interventions for health care treatments. A major stumbling block to organizing trials is recruitment and retention of enrollees.  Remote monitoring tools may overcome this obstacle. By providing study volunteers with mHealth devices, including smartphones and wearable technology, trials can access real-time availability of results.

On the trail of mHealth within Clinical Trials!

I recently chatted to a contact of mine that specialises in Clinical Research; I was surprised that only a few small aspects of mHealth technologies had been embraced within clinical trials.  This is supported by a recent survey  illustrating that less than half of trials had any form of mHealth technologies incorporated into their design.

I had assumed the ability to monitor constantly, consistently and collect accurate data would be a significant innovation and benefit to the development companies, investigators and patients alike! But there are many risks and barriers to consider.  I set out to understand better the area of clinical trials with respect to the use of mHealth technologies.

mHealth Trends For 2015…… And Beyond!

longterm_study_of_market_trends2015 is set up to be an exciting year for mHealth! A solid North American market is in place, investment in start-ups is estimated to pass $5 billion by the end of 2014 and the EU has already brought a Green Paper forward, in 2014 for consultation. The global adoption of many aspects of mHealth has been significant.  2014 saw the launch of the Apple Healthkit to great interest and expectation but a growing body of evidence indicates “wearables fatigue” can onset within six months of purchase!

Here are trends and direction for mhealth in 2015 and beyond compiled from personal observation and an extended body of research.

Tips On Caring About Your Personal Information In A Mobile Health Age!

ScreenHunter_06 Oct. 30 14.51I recently attended a client meeting where the subject of “Personal Identity” was covered.  Personal Identifiable Information (PII) is a relatively old concept; PII information [1]  includes any information “crumb” that make it possible to identify or trace an individual.  However, it has become far more significant as the Internet makes it easier to follow these crumbs and piece together a person’s identity for potentially fraudulent purposes.

This got me thinking about the challenge of managing personal identity with respect to Mobile health.  Previous blogs for this and other’s I have written have shown we can see strong growth in mobile health between now and 2020.  This growth brings into focus the challenges individuals and organisations have with respect the management of personal information.

Chris Toumazou -a Bio-medical engineer – Be Inspired!

Chris ToumazouI know this is probably a bit of cheat; yesterday, I listened to an interview with Prof. Chris Toumazou on a BBC Radio 4 programme “The Life Scientific“.

Chris works at Imperial College London as Chief Scientist of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Professor of Circuit Design at Imperial College London.

Chris has made it a vocation to bring together the best of medicine and electronic engineering to mobilise quantitative healthcare.

The latter half of the interview talks more about his work on bio-engineering; his personal experience of caring for his son, who had renal failure and, how this view of chronic healthcare motivated him to create new mobile means of measurement to improve outcomes for both the patient and the hospital.

There are further fascinating examples including miniature cochlea implants,  artificial pancreas and DNA micro-chip on a USB stick.

If you have 30 mins listen here to a very inspiring individual focused on mobile health technologies then do take the time.

mHealth a Collision of Positive Forces

Strong and HealthyI recently published a blog article on one of my client’s website; the blog looked at the current state and opportunity for mobile health devices, their impact on quantitative health and what is possible in the future.

I found the subject so fascinating, I have started my own blog on that specific subject to share what I discover, learn and currently know.

As a first step and to set the background to this blog, take a look at my last blog for Tigerspike “mhealth a collision of positive forces

A little about myself, I have spent nearly 20 yrs marketing and selling technology, one of my first acts was the launch of Windows 3.11 (Wow! that long ago). Ever since I have been a fan of technology; however I would not call myself an “early adopter” of technology rather a considered adopter.  I hope the content will educate, inform and entertain you the reader!
